Temporomandibular Disorder (TMJ)

Can Upper Cervical Care Help My TMJ Problems?

The jaw or temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is one of the most sensitive areas in the body. Dysfunction of this joint (called TMD) can cause a number of terribly unpleasant sensations including your jaw locking open or closed, clicking, grinding you teeth, and also intense temporal headaches or migraines.

There are four general categories of TMJ disorders:

  1. Dental where a misalignment of the teeth (e.g, overbite) creates pressure by causing the jaw to move abnormally;
  2. Cranial where a skull injury have caused the jaw to misalign;
  3. Upper Cervical where the nerves the control the jaw muscles cause everything to move abnormally; or
  4. Combination Problems involving some mixture of dentisty, cranial and spinal.

A Natural Solution – The Role of the Upper Neck in TMJ Problems

One of the most important things we do in our office for people with TMJ problems is determine which category of jaw problem you have – thus which form of care will help you most. For example, we are not dentists but work with a number of specialists when that is required. The element we are best at is resolving the upper neck component.

The jaw muscles are controlled by the Trigeminal Nerve, which emerges from the spinal cord all the way down to the level of the C3 vertebra in your neck. What this means that is that anything that negatively affects C1, C2 or C3 has the potential to affect the Trigeminal nerve and negatively affect the way that your jaw moves, leading to pain, grinding and other problems.

Have You Tried Upper Cervical Care to Help Your TMJ Problems?

We use the analogy of a combination lock with many TMJ problems. A combination lock requires the right digits in the correct order to open. Thus, correcting the alignment of the top vertebrae in your neck may not be the only thing required to solve your TMJ issues. However, if it is present, it is one absolutely essential element in providing the relief you are seeking..

Dr Jeffrey Hannah is an Upper Cervical Chiropractor, who has extensive training in the dynamics of the interconnectivity between the upper neck and the TMJ.
