Dizziness + Vertigo
Can Upper Cervical Care Help My Dizziness & Vertigo?
Dizziness and vertigo are two of the most horrendous, life-disruptive feelings a human can experience. It is shocking to learn that 70% of the population will experience some type of balance disorder in their lifetime!
Benign Positional Vertigo (BPV, also called Benign Proxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV) and Menieres Syndrome are two of the major types of vertigo disorders. The usual treatment for BPV and Meniere’s involves motion-sickness medication (Dramamine), natural supplements (ginger) and a low-sale diet, or a procedure called “Epley’s Manoeuvre,” which involves hanging your head over the edge of a table.
The Role of the Upper Neck in Dizziness & Vertigo
Although many people believe that BPV and Meniere’s Syndrome are caused by inflammation of the inner ear, neurologists and research indicates that the problem may originate from the joints in your upper neck: specifically, a misalignment of the joints in your upper neck.
The parts of your brain that process information about balance are called the Vestibular Nuclei, which are located in your the brainstem. Your brainstem sits in the lower part of your skull and descends all the way down to the level of the C1 and C2 vertebrae in your neck.
The Vestibular Nuclei do not receive information just from the inner ear. They also receive a tremendous amount of information from the temporomandibular joints (i.e., jaw) and from the upper cervical spine. In fact, the muscles that measure the position of the top two vertebrae in the neck contain the greatest density of nerve endings in the entire spine.
The implications of this fact are massive! It means that a misalignment coupled with abnormal motions of the two bones in the upper neck can have a major role in the cause of dizziness and vertigo.
