Your body isn’t designed to be stooping forwards all day! Your body is designed so that your head stays over top of your shoulders. And your head weighs about 5 Kg. That’s a bowling ball! Every 2.5 cm that you stick your head forwards like this, multiply that weight by two. ... 10 kilos. 20 kilos! Imagine filling a large suitcase to its max, and then putting all that weight on your head.

What Happens to your Neck on Your Phone?

Every 2.5cm that your head goes forwards - like this - DOUBLES the strain on your neck! Not only are your muscles going to get really tight and sore, but the pressure can cause ligament damage to the discs or even nerves in your neck. And that can cause headaches, jaw problems, dizziness, arthritis, tingling in your hands or pain anywhere in your body. Plus a whole host of other problems too many to mention here!

If we continue the path we’re currently on with our devices, I see a coming epidemic of head and neck problems. We’re already seeing some of the early signs! I shudder to think where the current teens & 20 year olds will be in 10 years!

What’s the Solution for the Neck-Phone Problem?

You see how good she's stretching her neck?

NO! NO! NO!! This is NOT a good exercise to stretch the neck for most people. Well, we can’t go back 15 years before everyone was glued to our mobile devices. But what we can do is take better care of our necks. That includes taking breaks from our phones. Doing exercises to support your neck daily - like brushing your teeth. (FYI: I haven't published videos on how to exercise your neck at the moment, but please check out more of our resources for when they come available).

And it also includes getting a periodic checkup with an expert on neck health - called an Upper Cervical doctor of chiropractic - to make sure that you don’t have a problem in your neck that is going to come back to haunt you in a few years.

If you’re experiencing pain with your neck - or better yet, you aren’t but want just a checkup to make sure that everything is okay! - visit atlashealth.com.au where you can sign up for our free ebook on how your neck affects the quality of your life
